Fun Run Photos

Ten year old Warren October was very excited when benefactor Regina Smith from Macassar invited him and eight of his friends to participate in the annual Senecio Fun Run, which took place on 14 March at Blaauwklippen Vineyards. This gave them the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with young and old who took to the vineyards running, walking - all in aid of children with physical disabilities.

Warren's right foot was amputated as a baby. He has outgrown his prosthesis and is waiting for a new one. This did not deter him from running the 5km race through the vineyards with his friends. Despite the discomfort of limping on his stump, he flashed a big smile when he ran across the finish line.

The Senecio fun run is an ideal platform where people with and without disabilities can participate together. This was the second year that the Fun Run was held at Blaauwklippen. The 10km route had to be adapted from going through Kabouterbos due to the devastating fires in the mountains the previous week, but was still challenging enough even for the fittest athletes.

The less fit enjoyed the 5km walk through the vineyards. The participants who completed the 5km route in their wheelchairs would have liked to see a more wheelchair friendly surface, but enjoyed the challenge, although they welcomed help at some spots.

A special mention has to be made of the learners of Somerset College who gave up their Saturday morning to act as volunteers. This lively bunch of teenagers brightened up the day; assisting with the water tables, marshalling and supporting the wheelchair users.

As in the past, 24Seven Plumbing not only sponsored the water tables, but manned it themselves with great enthusiasm. Physiotherapist Chris Sadie together with the Senecio therapists Luan Fick and Joany Rogers, made sure that sore and stiff muscles received some attention. Peninsula Beverages sponsored the Coke which was enjoyed by many thirsty participants.

The staff and children with disabilities who benefit from the services provided by Senecio, wish to thank all the sponsors as well as the participants who made this day possible.
