“The Best Vibe ever!”

This was the response from many of the participants of the sixth Senecio Fun Run on Saturday 12 April. Although there were slightly fewer participants than in the past, the 800 people that were there, enjoyed themselves tremendously.

This was the first year that the Senecio Fun Run was held at Blaauwklippen Vineyards. Natalie Campbell and her team from Blaauwklippen could not be more accommodating. Bennie and Nic from Runners Rest in Stellenbosch, gave up their time to mark the route that went through the vineyards, into the Paradyskloof forest and back. Learners from Somerset College who acted as marshalls on the route made sure no one got lost, while learners from Parel Vallei Highschool handed out medals at the end.

Responses from participants varied from, "It was great fun" to "Why on earth do you call it a FUN run - it was quite challenging!", depending on their levels of fitness. And that is exactly what Senecio aims to achieve, namely to provide a platform where fit and unfit, young and old as well as people with disabilities can participate together. The terrain was not ideal for the wheelchair users, but the US students who acted as volunteers made it possible for 65 persons with disabilities to take part and also enjoy the outdoors.

Once back at the finish line, participants and their supporters could enjoy the shade under the enormous wild fig trees, while sampling the food supplied by some of the Blaauwklippen market vendors. The parents could relax while their children were entertained by Matt McKinnon and Kayley Hayes from Payball, and enjoyed playing on the jumping castle supplied by Jump 4 Joy Prizegiving happened as soon as the last participants cought their breaths and finished their Coke, supplied by Peninsula Beverages. Andre du Toit, the man with the golden voice who acted as the MC kept the crowd entertained until the last lucky person left with one of the many fantastic spot prizes. The winners of the different categories went home with goodie bags supplied by Newton shoes and Runners Rest.

The day would not have been possible without the financial support from our two mainline sponsors, Pam Golding and Dykes van Heerden Law as well as all the other smallers sponsors.

Thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers and participants for making this day such a memorable event. Your support means that we will be able to supply the necessary service to those less fortunate than us - the individuals with physical disabilities.
