The Senecio Fun Run 2013 was the best Fun Run so far by far. More than 1000 people enjoyed a perfect day on the beautiful Lourensford wine estate. Due to the welcome rain during the past few weeks, it was pleasant even though it was a warm day.

Registration went like clockwork. Natalie Williams and her team or volunteers made sure that we were ready to start on time. There were 330 Participants in the 10km route and 570 Participants in the 5km route (including +/- 100 people with disabilities, and wheelchair users)

The Winners Were

Wheelchair Route
1. Charles Murray
2. Ernie Hodgson
3. Abdul Salie
10km:
1. Willem Martinson 36:39
2. Dylan Solms 39:10
3. Matt Swart 42:00
5km:
1. Janneje Turck 19:00
2. Schalk van der Merwe
3. Schalk van der Merwe Jnr
Obstacle Course:
Adult: Jandre Stramrood 1:08
Child: Joshua Knipe 1:58

The routes were similar to 2012's, just tweaked a bit to ensure even better views and more shade. Thanks to the well-marked route done by Liz Ward and Sue Fry as well as the excellent marshalling by volunteers from Somerset College, no one got lost.

Oasis donated the water for the three water points on the route. Volunteers from Somerset College, Paul Roos and 24Seven Plumbing made sure that everyone had enough water as well as encouragement to persevere. The music at the water point manned and sponsored by 24Seven plumbing was a special bonus.

Annalene Sadie and her team of family members, assisted by volunteers from Somerset House, made sure that participants arriving at the finish line received a handmade medal/key ring with the Senecio logo made by Jackson, our local bead and wire artist. The ice cold Coke, donated by Peninsula Beverages provided the “after-action, satisfaction” feeling. As an extra bonus, participants could take a copy of Car, Country Life, Popular Mechanics or Rolling Inspiration magazines.

As in the past, it was wonderful to see a mixture of people of all ages, abilities and levels of fitness taking part in the fun run. Dischem donated hampers for the winners in each category. Paul Williams, our Master of Ceremonies for the 3rd year in a row, entertained everybody with the original way in which the lucky draw was done!

One of the aims of this year's event was to involve more people with a variety of disabilities from different communities to take part in the fun run. We were very happy to have participants from Agape, Sibongile, Bizweni, Gabriella Centre as well as Little Angels. These centres are all supported by Senecio. We also welcomed participants from the Strand SCI group, Maties/Helderberg Sport club for people with disabilities, Ocean View APD, as well as individuals from Mitchells Plain and other areas. A special thank you to the volunteers from US Dept of Sport Science who earned their ice cold Coke by assisting the wheelchairs at the steep hill!

Another addition this year was the assistance of the dogs and their handlers of K9 Search and Rescue South Africa. They specifically assisted the people with disabilities on route and escorted them the whole way to ensure they do not get lost! Everybody was impressed with the way these dogs behaved and assisted where necessary.

Once back on the field, participants and their supporters were challenged to complete an obstacle course in a wheelchair under the capable supervision of Terri-Ann Abrahams. The wheelchairs were supplied by CE Mobility and the MDRI sponsored the hampers for the winners. The kids enjoyed a Jump for Joy jumping castle as well as activities coordinated by Playball. A beautiful, huge tent, partly sponsored by Zulu Overland, provided welcome shade where participants could indulge in delicious refreshments including fruit from Karstens farmers, fresh from the Lourensford orchards.

Senecio would like to thank all the volunteers, donors, sponsors and especially the participants who made this day possible. A special thanks to the Fun Run Committee who worked so hard behind the scenes.
