“Last year my 2 year old niece walked about 1.5km...this year, at 3 years she made the 3km mark...next year I am confident she will make the 5km mark. Thank you for a wonderful morning in the mist and sunshine, on a stunning route, among the vineyards and for such a good cause."

“What a wonderful event you hosted on Saturday. My friends and I will be back next year, will even try and drag along a few more. LOVE the medals, always nice getting a medal were you can see time and effort was put into it. Really stunning race and for such a great charity.”

“Well done guys! Awesome event. Track well marked. Water Tables perfect. A great day in the vineyards at Lourensford.”

These were some of the comments on the Facebook Senecio supporter’s page after the fourth Senecio Fun Run on Lourensford wine estate. Senecio, a registered non profit company whose vision is to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and their families, hosted its first Fun Run in 2009. 180 People turned up that day. On Saturday 3 March, 2012, 1070 people signed up for this increasingly popular event.

The day was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Lourensford, who offered the use of the estate, and Downing’s Marquees, who supplied the tent, at no cost. Peninsula Beverages and Oasis who donated the Coke and water, and Sanitech supplied the portable toilets at a reduced cost. There were 29 other companies and individuals whose donations made this day possible. Local artist Jackson once again supplied the unique wire and bead medals in the shape of the Senecio logo. More than 40 individuals donated their time and energy before, during and after the event.

There were three different routes which catered for different levels of fitness and expectations. The 10km route was fairly challenging, providing spectacular views of False Bay, while the 5km route was more suitable for the less fit and younger participants. Quite a few Moms with prams as well as wheelchair users were seen on the 5km off road route. Wheelchair users with day chairs and electric wheelchairs enjoyed the 5km tarred route which winded through the orchards, vineyards and past the tasting rooms.

This annual event is an ideal opportunity for young and old, fit and unfit, people with and without disabilities to participate together. More than 50 people with disabilities signed up for the event including children from Little Angels and Agape, two of the care centres where Senecio offers their services. This is in line with Senecio’s secondary vision, i.e. to create an awareness and acceptance of disability amongst the wider public. For veteran wheelchair user, Andries Hough, who has been competing in wheelchair events for the past forty years it was a unique experience. He took on the challenge of completing the 5 km off road route in his normal day chair, and had to “wheelie” on his back wheels for the whole five kilometres to prevent the smaller front wheels to get stuck on the somewhat sandy surface. “I will be back – but this time on a specially adapted hand cycle!” he said.

The organisers and participants are looking forward to an even bigger and better event next year.
