Senecio Support for People with Disabilities

Vision

Senecio will positively impact the lives of people with disabilities and their families. Our emphasis is currently on improving the lives of children with severe disabilities in the Helderberg Region, Western Cape, South Africa.

Modus Operandi

We offer our services at 8 Care Centres for children with disabilities. We also run an Out Patient Clinic once a fortnight. (See Projects)

After individual assessments, children are treated by qualified, experienced Occupational- and Physiotherapists for an intensive period of two to three weeks (block therapy), depending on the number of children at the centre. The emphasis is on what the child can almost do, and not on what he/she cannot do. The care givers are present during the treatment and certain handling techniques are explained to them. After the period of intensive therapy, each child receives a programme for the care givers to follow to ensure ongoing improvement while the therapists work at the next centre.

Each Centre will receive block therapy at least once a term. The therapists are available between the periods of block therapy for advice or guidance via telephone or e-mail.

Senecio is not just about offering therapy, but also about empowering the care givers knowledge and understanding. Apart from the hands on techniques that are shown and practiced during the block therapy, the care givers and parents are also given the necessary knowledge and skills to care more effectively for the children.
